What Is Endodontics?

What Is Endodontics?
When we talk about Endodontics, many people immediately associate it with the familiar idea of “devitalising” a tooth. However, although commonly used in Portuguese, this term is not technically correct. The appropriate term is root canal treatment, and that is what we are going to discuss today.
So, what is Endodontics?
Endodontics is a field of Dentistry concerned with diseases and injuries of the dental pulp — the inner part of the tooth that contains the nerves and blood vessels. When the pulp becomes inflamed or infected as a result of deep decay, trauma or another cause, root canal treatment may be necessary to save the tooth and avoid extraction.
Why is the idea of “devitalising” a tooth inaccurate?
Root canal treatment is not simply about “removing the life” from a tooth. Quite the opposite: it involves carefully cleaning, disinfecting and filling the inside of the tooth so that it can remain functional while reducing the risk of future infection. Even without its living internal tissue, the tooth can continue to perform its role in chewing and aesthetics.
When is root canal treatment necessary?
Root canal treatment may be needed when you experience severe pain, marked sensitivity to hot or cold, swelling of the gums, or when your dentist identifies an infection through radiographic examination. The earlier the problem is diagnosed, the better the chances of successful treatment.
How is the treatment performed?
At the Portuguese Institute of Endodontics, root canal treatment is carried out using modern, advanced technologies such as operating microscopes and digital equipment. Every step is designed to make the procedure comfortable, safe and effective.
The treatment involves:
Local anaesthesia to ensure comfort during the procedure;
Cleaning and disinfection of the root canal system;
Filling the cleaned space with appropriate materials;
Final restoration of the tooth to restore strength and function.
Benefits of root canal treatment
Preserves the natural tooth, avoiding extraction and implants;
Relieves pain and discomfort;
Helps prevent future infection;
Supports oral and general health.
