Where Technology and Expertise Meet
The Portuguese Institute of Endodontics is equipped with technology specifically selected for advanced endodontic diagnosis and treatment, including a Morita Veraview X800 high-resolution cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) system, an operating microscope, digital radiography, specialised ultrasonic instrumentation and electronic apex location.
These technologies are not an end in themselves. They are used when clinically indicated to improve visualisation, answer specific diagnostic questions and support a more precise and conservative treatment approach.
Dr Rui Pereira da Costa holds both a Master’s degree and a PhD in Endodontics and has dedicated his clinical practice exclusively to Endodontics for more than 20 years. He teaches in postgraduate Endodontics programmes at the University of Lisbon and the International University of Catalonia in Barcelona, and regularly contributes to specialist education and scientific meetings internationally.
His clinical activity is particularly focused on complex diagnosis, retreatment, procedural complications, microsurgery and the preservation of natural teeth whenever a predictable treatment option exists.
When should you seek an assessment at the Portuguese Institute of Endodontics?
Not every dental problem requires an Endodontist, but there are situations in which a specialist assessment can make a meaningful difference to diagnosis, symptom control and the possibility of preserving the natural tooth.
Persistent toothache
When pain does not settle, keeps returning or interferes with chewing, sleep or normal daily activity.
Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold
Especially when the sensation continues after the stimulus has been removed or becomes progressively more intense.

When there is swelling, an abscess, drainage or other signs of infection around a tooth, even if pain is absent or has reduced.
Symptoms in a previously root-treated tooth
If a tooth that has already undergone root canal treatment starts hurting again or remains uncomfortable when chewing or spontaneously.
